Finland, German and UK’s Governments motivate the use of open source

More and more countries consider necessary to implant open source to beneficiate of their multiples benefits. Finland has been the last one to propose it for their public administration. In turn German stimulates its economy investing in open source and U.K take stock of their use.

Last Monday, the Finnish government published a policy document in order to support the use open source and open standards. The document is titled ‘The use of open source software in public administration’. This document explain how the project can be viable as well as the benefits that it offers in cost saving and helping to accelerate the software development. Also it explains that the use of open source will not cause major risks to any organisation and this takes into account Europe’s legal framework. The Government encourages to participate in the open source development because “can lead to more benefits”.

The German government invokes the stability and growth package instrument with a framework concept for ICT (Information Communications Technology). The objective is to expand Green-It, Open Source and IT-security with a total budget of 500 millions of Euros of which 300 is made immediately available and 200 millions of Euros are on hold by the budget committee of the German Bundestages.

In the case of UK, since 2004, it has been increased 50% the use of the open source in the main departmental websites with Apache as the core web server. Also, it has been developed new open software products more competitive and easier to include in enterprise business solutions.
