ITI – R&D&I Center

 Organization

The ITI -Instituto Tecnológico de Informática- is a Technology Centre specialising in software technology Research, Development and Innovation. Created in 1994 as an initiative of the IMPIVA, the UPV and a group of companies from the IT sector, the ITI was set up as a non-profit organisation.

Its mission is to improve and maintain the competitive positioning of companies in the IT sector by means of R&D&I and the provision of advanced services.

ITI is located within the Polytechnic University of Valencia Campus, where it has all its facilities, with an approximated surface of 1656 m2. These facilities provide better distribution of the research groups, as well as a technical education classroom, a seminar room library and laboratory with specific equipment for every group. Moreover, the Institute has a hardware and software testing laboratories, prototype laboratories, training rooms, meeting rooms, resting rooms, etc. It has a team of 120 employees, with extensive experience in developing national and international research projects, in collaboration with companies and institutions.

Manager

Daniel Sáez Domingo is the Innovation Director of Technological Institute of Computer Science. He is working in detecting technology trends and market signals in order to guide the Institute and the companies about new products and processes which can become R&D&I or business opportunities. Moreover, he is the FLOSS Area manager, and he coordinates and manages the work team and the projects inside it, projects that are focused towards the spreading and transfer of the advantages open source offers to local industry and toward the development of free Service Oriented Platforms.

Products and Services

The ITI offers companies the possibility of adding the technologies and capabilities developed in R&D&I projects to its products, processes or business. The technologies and services on offer are the result of a combination of advanced scientific knowledge and experience in collaboration with companies, generating and transferring the knowledge needed to industry and society evolution.

To carry out its mission, the ITI leads and takes part in: a) cooperative projects with companies in the sector developing basic and applied research projects, b) individual projects following ITI’s research lines, c) technology spreading actions attending conferences and other forums of scientific and industrial knowledge, d) innovation management actions in companies, e) promoting ITI’s partner products and f) supporting technological spin-offs. In order to fulfil its aims, it has a technological observatory and participates in technological platforms.

Working with the ITI provides great flexibility and the possibility of adapting its technologies and capabilities to the specific needs of each project, since all the technologies emerge from its own R&D.

SIU Consortium

Background

The SIU is a consortium of 37 Public University Institutions from Argentina that develops software solutions and provides services to the National University System and other national, provincial and municipal government agencies.

Its aim is to improve the management of institutions enabling safe, complete and available information.

Currently there are over 850 SIU system implementations. Among other issues, these systems manage the academic life of approximately 700,000 students, the administration and payment of salaries of about 150,000 agents and a budget of over $ 7 billion pesos. The SIU Community consists of more than ten thousand people including authorities, system users, computer technicians, functional analysts, auditors, among others.

The SIU joined the free software movement in 2003, adopting PHP as programming language and PostgreSQL as database management system. Since its beginning in 1996, it promotes collaborative work, so it encourages the active participation of all the actors, better practices and experience socialization. To achieve a better integration of IT solutions, the SIU built a cross-sectional environment where knowledge is democratized, shared and made transparent among community members.

Solutions

The need for an adequate tool to build transactional systems of medium and high complexity became evident with the diversity of systems developed by the SIU, which was why the SIU-Toba development environment was created. Shortly after, this tool became the standard platform with which the following systems were built -among others-: human resource systems (SIU-Mapuche), budget-accounting-financial management (SIU-Pilagá), procurement, contracting and heritage management (SIU-Diaguita).

Among the main features of the SIU-Toba, we can highlight its own editing environment that allows creating complex interfaces in a declarative manner, enables transaction management concealing problems inherent to Web technology and facilitates group work both locally as well as remote. It is based on a set of widespread free tools: Apache, PHP and PostgreSQL.

On July 3rd, 2007, SIU-Toba was declared free software by the Ministerial Resolution 823/2007, becoming the first open source software developed in Argentina. This milestone created new paths for the SIU-Toba, for it began to be recognized and used by members of the Free Software users community.
