Last number of Technology Review presents several articles about Web 2.0 and its future. In this context, Web 2.0 means the technology to built social network. In these essays we can read some critics about how, as everybody knows, over and over we swell the bubble until it bursts.
The most successful Web 2.0 companies, as Facebook or MySpace, not only have few revenues, but in many cases they are losing a lot of money. In other way, it is surprising that many of web 2.0 start-up do not reveal revenue information so it might think that “staying mum about revenue was always a sign that there wasn’t much to talk about”[1].
These portals have a lot of user but its CPM (cost per mille or price per thousand times an ad is served) are ridiculous compared to lesser generic websites and this is the key to understands why the business is taking off yet. They can not filter users properly, so the advertising price is low. But how can they filter user without force its privacy? This is the one million questions and the example of Beacon program (a Facebook mini application) shows that it is not easy to anwser.
Many of this problems were discussed in the EconSM[2] Conference and it seems that the solution could be in the improvement of the target of users of social networks. Companies such as 33Across or Xtract areworking on it with a relative success….
It is clear that we need technological improvements to help us to better target our social network users and this bring us new business opportunities.
